Dutch Government Tightens Asylum Rules Amid Housing Crisis and Migration Pressure
In a bold move to address the surging asylum influx, the Dutch government, under the leadership of Geert Wilders, has declared a state of asylum crisis, bypassing the need for parliamentary approval. With The Netherlands grappling with a severe housing shortage and one of the highest population densities in Europe, Dutch Asylum Minister Marjolein Faber announced emergency measures to restrict asylum applications.
Minister Faber, a prominent figure in Wilders’ Party for Freedom (PVV), declared the need for urgent action, stating: “The entire system is overwhelmed, there are no more houses, and people are suffering. We need to curb the influx immediately by invoking an asylum crisis.” This move, under the Aliens Act, will grant the government the power to halt refugee decisions for up to two years. In addition, the Netherlands will request to opt out of the EU’s migration rules, following the precedent set by Denmark in the 1990s.

The new restrictions fulfil a key promise of the coalition agreement brokered by Wilders, whose party emerged as the largest in last year’s elections. Wilders celebrated the decision on social media, stating, “2.5 million people voted for the PVV, and we are delivering on our commitments.”
The government is also aiming to tighten family reunification rules for recognised refugees and reduce legal immigration by cutting student and work visas. These measures signal a significant shift in Dutch migration policy, with potential implications for EU-wide asylum agreements.
