eThekwini Announces Water Restrictions Amid Supply Challenges
eThekwini, a prominent city in South Africa, is gearing up to implement significant water restrictions starting next week. This decision comes in response to a pressing issue of demand surpassing available supply, as highlighted by the city’s Water and Sanitation Unit. Headed by Ednick Msweli, the unit unveiled a comprehensive 12-month plan aimed at curbing water usage across the municipality.
During a recent council meeting, Msweli pointed out several factors contributing to the water crisis, including rapid urbanisation, ageing infrastructure, and widespread illegal connections. He emphasised that these issues have collectively driven up water consumption rates well beyond sustainable levels.
“The first step will focus on reducing water losses, followed by efforts to curtail demand at the household level,” Msweli explained to council members. He cited concerns raised by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), noting that Durban’s average water consumption currently stands at approximately 268 litres per person per day, significantly higher than recommended levels.
As part of their strategy, the city plans to install water restrictors in various communities, effectively limiting water usage directly at the metre. Msweli also called upon local ward councillors to support and promote the initiative within their respective constituencies.
This move underscores eThekwini’s proactive approach to managing its water resources amidst mounting challenges, aiming not only to conserve water but also to ensure sustainable usage for the future.
