Former MMC Malusi Booi Granted R250k Bail in R1bn Tender Fraud Case
Former City of Cape Town MMC Malusi Booi, implicated in a R1 billion tender fraud and corruption case, has been granted bail amounting to R250,000 by the Cape Town magistrate’s court. Booi, aged 47, was arrested in the Eastern Cape and appeared in court following his bail application. Alongside him, several others including former City of Cape Town officials and business figures were also arrested in connection with housing tenders totalling over R1 billion.
Booi had requested a bail amount of R5,000, but the state suggested R200,000. Magistrate Alida Theart ultimately set Booi’s bail at R250,000, imposing strict conditions prohibiting contact with witnesses and restricting his movement outside the Eastern Cape without notifying the investigating officer. Additionally, Booi is barred from leaving the country during the trial.
The court proceedings also saw bail granted to other co-accused, including Abdul Kader and the Mullins’, each at R250,000, while others received varying bail amounts. The case has been adjourned until October 16 for further investigation and the inclusion of alleged underworld figure Ralph Stanfield and his wife Nicole Johnson in the list of accused.
Eric Ntabazalila, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), expressed satisfaction with the bail conditions and indicated plans to add more defendants to the case as investigations progress. Charges faced by the accused range from contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA) to money laundering and fraud, with the possibility of additional charges pending further investigation.
