Georgia Defends Family Values with New Legislation Amidst Western Pressure

In a bold move, the Georgian parliament overwhelmingly passed the Family Values bill with an 84-0 vote, demonstrating a strong commitment to traditional values and national identity. This legislation, supported by the ruling Georgian Dream Party, emphasises the protection of public morality by restricting events like ‘Pride’ marches and regulating depictions of non-traditional sexual behaviours in media.
The bill’s passage signifies Georgia’s unwavering stance on preserving its cultural heritage and family-orientated values, despite pressure from Western influences. President Salome Zourabichvili is expected to sign the bill, reflecting broad support within the government to uphold these principles.
“This legislation reaffirms our commitment to safeguarding our national identity and cultural values,” stated Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili, highlighting the importance of maintaining Georgia’s unique societal fabric.
The European Union, while critical of the bill, acknowledges Georgia’s sovereign right to legislate according to its cultural and moral standards. This legislative decision underscores Georgia’s independence in shaping its own future amidst global pressures.
