KwaZulu-Natal Takes Action: Launching a Climate Change Council for a Sustainable Future
In response to escalating climate challenges, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is set to establish a pioneering Climate Change and Sustainability Council. Premier Thami Ntuli emphasises the urgency, stressing that climate change is no longer theoretical but a pressing reality threatening the province’s ecological and social fabric. This move comes in the wake of severe weather events that have recently battered the region.
Premier Thami Ntuli of KwaZulu-Natal has announced plans to establish a Climate Change and Sustainability Council in response to escalating climate threats facing the province. Addressing concerns raised during his recent participation at Global Climate Week in New York, Ntuli underscored the need for immediate action, citing recent extreme weather events that have disrupted lives and livelihoods across KZN.
“The devastating floods of April 2022, veld fires, tornadoes, and unprecedented snowfall have highlighted the urgency of strengthening our climate resilience,” Premier Ntuli stated. He emphasised the province’s lack of adequate early warning systems and pledged to lead collaborative efforts in acquiring advanced weather predictive technologies.
The Climate Change and Sustainability Council aims to unify experts in climate science, government officials, and community representatives to develop robust strategies. These include implementing climate-resilient infrastructure, enhancing disaster preparedness, and promoting sustainable practices across the province.
“As we move forward, dialogue will be crucial,” Ntuli added, announcing plans for inclusive discussions to engage citizens and stakeholders in shaping KZN’s climate response. This initiative aligns with global best practices and insights gained during the Global Climate Week, where international collaboration inspired KZN’s proactive stance.
KwaZulu-Natal’s initiative marks a significant step towards mitigating the impacts of climate change and ensuring a sustainable future for its residents. By fostering dialogue and leveraging scientific expertise, the Climate Change and Sustainability Council aims to lead by example in climate resilience and environmental stewardship.
