Virginia Moves to Legalize Infanticide: Abortion Up to Birth Approved

Virginia has taken a controversial and deeply troubling step in the realm of reproductive rights. On January 14, the Virginia House of Delegates passed a resolution aimed at protecting abortion access, including late-term procedures, under the guise of reproductive freedom. This decision, driven by Democratic lawmakers, seeks to enshrine abortion as a fundamental right, even up to the point of birth.

Such a move must be critically examined from a moral and biblical perspective. While society claims progress in granting individuals freedom over their bodies, this law raises profound ethical and spiritual concerns about the sanctity of life.

Biblical Context:

The Bible speaks unequivocally about the sanctity of life, emphasizing that every life is created by God and bears His image. The commandment in Exodus 20:13, “Thou shalt not kill,” establishes a foundational principle that murder, including the taking of innocent life in the womb, is a grave sin.

In Ecclesiastes 11:5, Scripture states: “As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.” This verse highlights the miraculous and divine nature of conception and development within the womb, a process beyond human understanding or intervention.

Similarly, Psalms 139:13-16 declares: “For thou hast possessed my reins: Thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: Marvellous are thy works; And that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, When I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; And in thy book all my members were written, Which in continuance were fashioned, When as yet there was none of them.”

This profound passage reveals that every human life is not only known by God but also intentionally and intricately formed by Him. To destroy what God has created is to directly oppose His will and design. Furthermore, the verse “For what God has brought together let no one separate” (Matthew 19:6) applies broadly to life—what God has given, humanity has no right to take away.

Moral and Societal Decay:

The push for such extreme abortion measures reflects a society increasingly untethered from godly principles. In Isaiah 5:20, it is written: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” This warning rings true today as legislation celebrates the termination of innocent lives under the guise of rights and freedoms.

Abortion proponents often frame their arguments in terms of personal autonomy, yet this framing ignores the autonomy of the unborn child. The deliberate taking of life—at any stage of development—is not a reflection of progress but a stark reminder of humanity’s descent into moral relativism.

Criticism of the Legislation:

The Virginia resolution does not simply protect reproductive rights; it legitimizes the destruction of life in its most vulnerable state. By allowing abortions up to birth, this law denies the humanity of the unborn child, treating life as disposable and subject to the whims of personal choice. Such legislation ignores scientific advancements that show the viability of life at earlier stages and disregards the emotional and psychological consequences for those involved.

More importantly, it disregards the fundamental truth that life begins at conception and is sacred from that moment. To treat life as anything less than God’s masterpiece is to reject His sovereignty and wisdom.

Abortion should never be enshrined as a right. A life is a life, imbued with inherent dignity and value by the Creator Himself. To legislate the destruction of life in the womb is to align with a culture that celebrates evil and rejects God’s presence. As believers, we must stand against such measures, advocate for the voiceless, and uphold the biblical truth that all life is fearfully and wonderfully made.

In a world that increasingly embraces darkness, let us be the light that points back to the Author of Life.
