The South African Dilemma: Minority Influence, Majority Consumers

Take a moment and look at your kitchen shelves. That loaf of bread, the milk in your fridge, the cheese, the butter, the pasta for tonight—what if I told you that up to 90% of what you eat carries a hidden signature? A mark signaling a system operating quietly, yet powerfully, under our noses. In South Africa, this is no conspiracy. This is Halal certification, a R45 billion ecosystem largely funded by non-Muslim consumers—like you—without your consent.

The South African Dilemma

South Africa’s Muslim community represents 1.6% of the population. Yet, Halal-certified products dominate supermarkets. How does such a small minority dictate what millions of South Africans buy?

Certification bodies—SANHA, the Muslim Judicial Council, UNISA Halal—hold the keys to shelf space. Multi-million-rand companies must pay fees, open their doors to scrutiny, and often hire Muslim supervisors to ensure compliance.

The economic pressure is immense. Non-certified suppliers are excluded, and contracts are terminated. Consumers fund this parallel economy, with little transparency and no government oversight. Water, bread, milk—ordinary items—become contributions to a system few understand, potentially financing religious institutions and activities beyond mere audits.

A Biblical Perspective on Halal Consumption

The spiritual dimension is critical. The Bible is clear: Christians are called to avoid participation in practices tied to false gods.

Exodus 34:13–16 instructs Israel to avoid idolatry and the consumption of food offered to other deities.

Revelation 2:14–20 condemns participation in idolatry alongside sexual immorality.

Acts 15:28–29 records the Jerusalem Council mandating abstention from food polluted by idols.

1 Corinthians 10:19–21 warns: “Do you not know that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God?”

Halal meat, prepared with ritualistic invocations to Allah, raises serious concerns for Christians. Consuming it knowingly crosses the line from dietary choice to spiritual compromise.

Government Complicity and Cultural Erosion

Where is the South African government? There are no state-regulated standards for Halal, no labeling laws to protect consumers, and complaints to the CRL Commission have gone unanswered since 2018.

Meanwhile, the Western Cape government invests millions in Halal infrastructure, while the average South African feels like a stranger in their own supermarket. The government’s inaction allows a parallel economic and cultural system to flourish without accountability.

The Call to Action

We must confront this system—not with anger, but with enterprise:

Support non-Halal supply chains and local producers.

Build markets that respect choice, transparency, and consumer rights.

Christians must discern carefully, avoiding participation in practices tied to false gods.

Economic freedom and spiritual integrity go hand in hand. We must take deliberate steps to ensure our choices align with God’s Word.

Halal certification in South Africa is more than food labeling—it is a socio-economic and spiritual concern. We are being forced to consume products without knowledge, funding a system that does not serve us and operates without public oversight.

The choice is ours: passive acceptance or deliberate creation of alternatives that respect conscience, faith, and freedom.

Reflective Question: When you shop tomorrow, whose principles are shaping what ends up on your plate—and are you prepared to fund them unknowingly?

Selective Empathy Violates God’s Moral Order, Undermining True Justice and Biblical Compassion for All Victims

The term Gender-Based Violence (GBV) has become the dominant social crisis in South Africa. We hear it from government press conferences, UN panels, NGOs, and protests. The narrative is simple: violence against women and girls. It is repeated so frequently that questioning it seems almost heretical.

Yet when one pauses and listens to the families around us — broken homes, murdered farmers, abused boys, tormented husbands — an uncomfortable reality surfaces: violence does not care about gender.

The biblical worldview tells us something even more foundational: violence is the symptom of sin, not of masculinity. And when we design policies around ideology instead of truth, we replace compassion with politics and justice with propaganda.

Violence Is Not Gendered — Scripture Judges All Equally

At the core of the GBV narrative sits a modern philosophy: gender determines the moral hierarchy of victims and perpetrators. Politicians and funders have weaponized the idea that women are the “default victims” and men the “default oppressors.”

But the Bible refuses to play identity politics.

“You shall do no injustice in judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor nor honor the mighty.” — Leviticus 19:15

God’s justice is blind to categories.
No gender gets a monopoly on innocence.
No group holds a monopoly on violence.

The modern ideology says, “Protect women, fear men.”
Scripture says, “Judge righteously. Protect all who suffer harm.”

The True Root of Violence: The Fallen Human Heart

The GBV narrative imagines violence as a gendered problem.
The Bible speaks bluntly:

Violence flows from the corruption of humanity.

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.” — Jeremiah 17:9

Cain did not kill Abel because one was male and one female.
The first murder was not gender-based; it was sin-based.

Societies crumble when they mistake spiritual decay for political categories.
Today, government panels label violence as “patriarchal” and “toxic masculine” — broad accusations that condemn millions of men, including those who are victims, fathers, and protectors.
It’s lazy.
It’s dishonest.
And it is absolutely unbiblical.

Selective Empathy Is Not Christian Compassion

Scripture commands us to defend all the vulnerable — not just the fashionable ones.

“Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.” — Proverbs 31:9

A boy abused in silence is not less worthy than a girl.
A father beaten by a partner is not less human.
A farmer tortured in a remote farmhouse is not “politically inconvenient.”
A baby in the womb is not exempt from compassion.

The GBV framework tells society:

Believe women by default.

Ignore male suffering.

Justify violence against the unborn.

Label dissent as “hate.”

That is not justice.
It is ideological tribalism masquerading as morality.

When Activists Replace Law, Justice Dies

South Africa pours money into slogans, awareness campaigns, and international activism — while police stations crumble, trauma centers collapse, and forensic backlogs grow.

The Bible never assigns justice to protesters or NGO committees.
It gives the sword to lawful authority.

“For he is God’s servant for your good… he does not bear the sword in vain.” — Romans 13:4

Instead, we see:

NGOs chasing donor money.

Foundations funding causes that gain political leverage.

Government outsourcing morality to activists.

Justice becomes public theater — not protection.

The Most Radical Hypocrisy: “Protect Women” While Funding Abortion

The same global institutions that cry for “women’s safety” bankroll abortion networks.
Billions are spent to defend adult women while millions of unborn girls — and boys — are killed without a burial or a name.

Scripture does not whisper about this:

“Hands that shed innocent blood… the Lord hates.” — Proverbs 6:17

The GBV ideology worships selective dignity.
The Bible protects life.

A Biblical Response To Violence

Christianity does not divide society into villains and victims based on gender.

A biblical society:

Strengthens law

Protects every innocent person

Judges violence without ideological filters

Demands repentance, accountability, and discipline

Where the GBV framework fragments society, Scripture heals it.

GBV is not a Christian doctrine.
It is a secular ideology crafted to:

Divide the sexes

Manufacture guilt

Secure funding

Reduce human suffering to gender narratives

Justify political activism over lawful justice

Violence is violence.
Sin is sin.
And every life deserves protection.

Israel, or shall I say the IDF’s actions during the war in Gaza, has led to much debate and an explosion of criticism from the Left, in particular, pro-Palestinians and people of the Islamic faith. This is understandable, as the death toll in Gaza has been very high, and Hamas has not made it any easier on Netanyahu’s brave men. This is a war unlike anything we have ever witnessed. No other nation or ‘Resistance group’ will use its own people as shields or keep hostages in terror tunnels for months on end, even when they are losing the war and being eliminated like ants. Am I a fan of everything that the IDF has had to do? No, I am not.

Reading letters from the likes of Nashad Dada (the truth that Judeo-Christians need to reflect on) and then Z Khan’s letter (There can be no liberation without resistance), it has become clear to me that there is a huge misunderstanding, not only about what the Bible says about who Isael really is, but also the fact that it was never about land, but more about ideology and God’s promises to His people. Now, although Muslims acknowledge that Jesus exists and that He was indeed a prophet, they tend to confuse the scriptures of the Bible with the actions of Israel, the geographical Middle-Eastern nation. Are all Jews Zionists? No. Are all Christians in favour of murdering Gazans? Certainly not. Do all Jews believe in Jesus? No, they don’t. I have been called a Zionist, compared with Trump and other individuals such as Piers Morgan, who, by the way, has been very critical of Israel lately, and there is an assumption that I support genocide. This is complete rubbish! Dada and Khan have nothing else to offer in this argument, so all they do is revert back to the scripted narrative of using buzz words such as ‘Occupation, Ethnic cleansing, Genocide and Apartheid’. These words are used ad nauseam, as Radical Islam is strengthening its grip on the Western World.

It is critical for my detractors to firstly understand that I believe in Jesus, and yes, that He preached peace, love and forgiveness. Netanyahu is not Jesus, and most Jews don’t acknowledge Christ, the Messiah, as their savior. They follow Old Testament law, which clearly is something that Jesus came to fulfil, but also to do away with. His death on the Cross paid the ultimate price for all Sin, and human sacrifices, as still practiced by Jews regularly, are no longer required. Why is it that people of Islam find it necessary to compare the IDF with Jesus, or try to draw a parallel between their actions and what He taught? This can never be accurate. A lot of what is going on in Gaza right now is chaotic and unacceptable, from both sides, but show me one war where there have been no casualties, or where the ratio of combatants to civilians killed is so low, as with this war? You see, it’s not about ethnic cleansing or Occupation at all; it’s a spiritual war between a lost Biblical nation that won’t acknowledge Christ, and a people who claim that possession of land is an excuse to try and eradicate an entire nation, after which the Christians will be the next target.

I don’t have to be a Jew to be concerned about or speak out against what I see happening all over the World with Free Palestine protests, antisemitic attacks and aggressive, radicalized individuals who chant ‘Death to Israel and death to America’. Globalising an Intifada is demonic!. Tell me about one good thing that these protests have produced? Nothing! It’s all about making a statement and twisting the truth to try to excuse barbaric ‘resistance fighters’ to act the way they do. No religion on Earth, not Islam, nor Hinduism, nor Christianity, should necessitate the brutal killing of another. If you want to criticize me for speaking up against radical Islam, then stop chanting death to Israel or America, and stop the violent protests and ongoing chaos.

Are We Trading Human Dignity for Lawless Indulgence Under the Guise of ‘Rights’ and ‘Autonomy’?

As South Africa’s Encounters Documentary Festival premieres Womxn: Working, a film lauding sex workers’ battle for legal reform, one is compelled to ask: at what point does society’s pursuit of ‘justice’ become an open rebellion against divine law?

The documentary follows the stories of sex work activists who fight not merely for legislative reform but for cultural acceptance of a trade that God’s Word unequivocally condemns. In a world increasingly obsessed with redefining morality to suit secular appetites, this film serves as a sobering marker of how far contemporary society has strayed from biblical truth.

Scripture is clear on this matter. In Leviticus 19:29 (KJV), we are commanded:

“Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore; lest the land fall to whoredom, and the land become full of wickedness.”

The implications are societal. When a nation elevates sin under the guise of ‘human rights’ and ‘bodily autonomy,’ it risks moral decay, leaving communities vulnerable to lawlessness, violence, and God’s judgment.

Furthermore, while the film seeks to position sex workers as empowered activists reclaiming autonomy over their bodies, Scripture teaches that true dignity is not found in defying God’s ordinances but in obedience to them. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 (KJV) reminds us:

“Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body… ye are not your own. For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

What is notably absent from this documentary’s narrative is a serious reckoning with the spiritual consequences of legitimising vice. The claim that criminalisation enables violence ignores the deeper spiritual crisis: a nation that has forsaken God’s moral law and now seeks to legalise what God calls an abomination.

The push for decriminalisation, cloaked in the language of ‘rights’ and ‘safety,’ is not merely a policy debate—it is a rebellion against divine authority. Proverbs 14:34 (KJV) warns:

“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”

The increasing normalisation of prostitution, whether through media, advocacy or legislature, represents a broader spiritual warfare for the soul of the nation. South Africans — and Christians in particular—must discern the spirits behind such movements and confront them with the truth of the Gospel.

While compassion towards those trapped in cycles of poverty and exploitation is both just and necessary, it cannot come at the cost of affirming sin. Real redemption lies not in legal reform but in salvation through Jesus Christ. As John 8:11 (KJV) records, when faced with the adulterous woman, Christ did not condone her sin but said,

“Go, and sin no more.”

The film’s celebration of defiance against God’s moral order should not be met with applause but with heartfelt prayer and an urgent call for repentance, both from those within the sex trade and from a nation increasingly proud of its rebellion.

Will South Africa heed the ancient warning, or will it persist in legalising the very sins that bring down nations? The answer will shape not only our earthly society but also our eternal destinies.

Global Media and Schools Exploit Climate Narratives to Control the Next Generation’s Worldview and Opinions

The phrase “Building Tomorrow’s Thought Leaders” sounds inspiring on paper. But when you scratch the surface of initiatives like Liberty Midlands Mall’s ARTopia School Arts Project, the question arises: are we cultivating independent, resilient young people — or grooming the next generation of climate-obsessed activists who mistake protest placards for problem-solving?

In truth, this initiative follows a dangerous global trend: embedding children into politically loaded environmental campaigns before they’ve even mastered life’s essential survival skills. Schools are no longer just teaching arithmetic, language and life orientation—they’re shaping ideological leanings. The implications of that should concern every responsible adult.

1. Propaganda Masquerading as Education

When environmental education leans heavily into alarmism, it risks becoming outright indoctrination. Historical context is deliberately neglected—conversations about natural climate cycles like the Mediaeval Warm Period, the Little Ice Age, or the role of volcanic activity in historical climate shifts are conspicuously absent from these programmes.

As pointed out in the New York Post, this kind of thinking isn’t new. The groundwork for activist mindsets is often laid in childhood, with schools using sustainability rhetoric to mould young minds into tomorrow’s “crisis champions.” The result? A generation trained to accept climate alarmism as an unchallenged fact, without the critical faculties to dissect its complexities.

2. Child Activism Is Exploitative

Across the globe, children are being used as emotional leverage in climate debates. In Australia, for example, the Climate 200 group faced public backlash for turning schoolchildren into political props for their climate messaging. The Australian reported how children’s faces and voices were used in emotionally charged campaigns, designed to guilt-trip voters and reinforce state-driven narratives.

This isn’t empowerment—it’s exploitation. Children should be allowed to enjoy their innocence, learn practical, hands-on skills, and gradually develop their own worldviews. Handing them activist placards before they can balance a household budget or cook a meal is reckless.

3. We Should Be Teaching Survival, Not Social Engineering

A vital point often ignored in these debates is what practical life skills children miss out on while they’re busy painting protest posters about carbon footprints. Instead of spending weeks producing art about melting ice caps, imagine if children learned how to grow vegetables, fix a puncture, cook a balanced meal, or manage personal finances.

These skills don’t just foster independence—they cultivate resilience and personal accountability. The sort of real-world competence that prepares young people to navigate actual hardship, rather than drowning in abstract, fear-based narratives about an impending planetary apocalypse.

4. Children Deserve To Think—Not Be Told What To Think

Education at its best doesn’t prescribe conclusions; it equips students with the tools to analyse evidence and arrive at reasoned positions. Scholar Bob Jickling made this clear in his work on environmental education, warning that programmes pushing a single worldview under the banner of “sustainable development” were a betrayal of authentic education. It turns schools into echo chambers, where dissenting voices are silenced, and curiosity is replaced with compliance.

When initiatives like ARTopia are framed as mandatory virtue-signalling exercises, young minds are discouraged from exploring alternative viewpoints—whether questioning climate dogma, government policy, or the motives behind corporate-sponsored activism.

5. Psychological Harm From Climate Alarmism

There’s mounting evidence that climate-related fearmongering is causing measurable harm to children’s mental health. Critics worldwide have labelled this practice a form of psychological abuse. As highlighted by voices from India and the US, exposing children to relentless end-of-world rhetoric has left many anxious, fearful, and distrustful of their futures.

The New York Post article elaborates on how this brand of activism-in-education has already warped campus culture, with graduates emotionally unprepared for a world that doesn’t conform to their ideological conditioning.

Conclusion: We Need Balance—Not Blind Acceptance

While the ARTopia School Arts Project may appear well-meaning on the surface, it feeds into a broader, unsettling trend: turning children into foot soldiers for ideological causes before they’re old enough to grasp the complexities of the issues at hand.

What Pietermaritzburg’s youth—and children everywhere—need are the tools to thrive in a demanding, often unforgiving world. Let them learn to grow food, repair an engine, read contracts, debate ideas, and evaluate evidence critically. Not to carry the weight of global environmental policy on their shoulders, while the adults who benefit from these programmes conveniently sidestep accountability.

We should demand more from our educational institutions and corporate community projects. Not activism. Not alarmism. But the cultivation of thoughtful, practical, and resilient citizens, armed with skills to survive—and question—the world they inherit.

The war in Gaza has been extremely polarising. We’ve seen it on Piers Morgan’s show, on Al Jazeera, SABC and CNN…… I had to humble myself by coming to the conclusion that all this bickering and arguing about who is right and who is wrong in the Israel vs. Hamas/Iran war has less to do with land and more to do with who the true Israel really is.

As a Christian, I always knew that Israel was a chosen nation of people who were supposed to reflect God to the world and have dominion over the Earth, since the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were all from the lineage of Christ Jesus. Jacob’s name was even changed to.’ Israel, which means “LET GOD PREVAIL.” It is only until now that I have had to take time and reflect and ask myself who Israel really is. Are they just Arabs who come from the lineage of a very holy man, the Son of God? Or perhaps they are bearded men with olive skin who all look like Jesus and speak in Hebrew? We all have these assumptions of who God’s chosen people are, yet we never ask ourselves, What was the purpose of God creating man and woman in His likeness and image? Was it to see who would overpower whom over a piece of land? I don’t think so. Think a bit deeper!

Then there’s the issue of what it means to be a Jew or a Gentile. For those who don’t know, in the Old Testament of the Bible, the Jews were known to be the ones who, by birthright, automatically qualified as God’s people, yet their hearts were filled with bitterness, like a stone. They lacked having a true relationship with God; hence, they got caught up in religious activities, much like some other religions today require their followers to do, and thus, the birth and the life of Jesus, the Messiah, God’s one and only Son, brought about a massive change—some would call it ‘going against the grain’—but’ He had truly flipped the script.

Performing miracles, challenging the so-called Biblical experts, the Pharisees and Sadducees, by answering their most difficult questions with His own questions. This caused a huge rift amongst the people of that time, and even today, we have Jews living in Israel who still hold onto the idea of an Almighty God; yet, they do not believe, like many today, that Jesus is the Messiah. They still believe in Old Testament rituals and earning their way to the Father through works. Gentiles, on the other hand, believe in Jesus without any Jewish birthright or without being from the lineage of Christ.

The point I am making is this: whilst we argue about Israel ‘stealing’ the land in Gaza and apparently are complicit in a ‘genocide,’ have we ever asked ourselves this question: was Israel really established in 1948, or have they always been God’s chosen people? The answer to this question has finally hit me—it is not the people who physically live in Israel today, alone, but all those who believe in God the Father and have acknowledged the Son, Jesus Christ, as Saviour. We are getting fixated on people who occupy land in the Middle East, whilst God has been trying to teach us that only through a relationship with Him can we be saved. We are all missing the point!

If you ask anyone, can Israel be destroyed? … The answer is an emphatic no. The real Israel that we read about in the Word of God is not modern-day Israel, but those who believe in the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. God’s Kingdom will reign forever. It will not and cannot be stopped.

In a stunning and silent move, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has pulled the plug on the Afrikaans news bulletin on SABC2, sparking nationwide outrage, questions, and calls for accountability.

The Afrikaans news bulletin, which aired daily on SABC2, was abruptly discontinued over the weekend without any prior announcement or official explanation. The move has ignited sharp criticism from political and civil rights groups alike. The Democratic Alliance (DA) and AfriForum have come out strongly, accusing the broadcaster of marginalizing the Afrikaans-speaking community, a demographic that includes over 300,000 regular viewers.

The decision also brings renewed scrutiny to the role and responsibility of the SABC as South Africa’s national public broadcaster, particularly in a country that prides itself on having 11 official languages. Afrikaans, though historically controversial due to its association with apartheid, remains the third most spoken language in South Africa and is a cultural cornerstone for many, including large numbers of brown and black Afrikaans-speaking citizens.

While SABC’s financial woes are no secret, many suspect deeper agendas. Budget cuts, a strategic shift toward English-dominant content, or a broader transformation mandate may be influencing these decisions. However, the lack of transparency from SABC has only deepened public frustration.

Adding fuel to the fire is the recent pattern of declining Afrikaans representation on SABC2. From the cancellation of beloved series like 7DE LAAN and PASELLA, to now axing the news, critics argue that Afrikaans content is being methodically erased from the public broadcaster’s programming slate.

ANOTHER STEP IN REMOVING AFRIKAANS LANGUAGE AND CULTURE FROM SOUTH AFRICA.

SABC just announced that they will be discontinuing the popular News in Afrikaans broadcast.

This raises bigger questions: Is the SABC evolving with the times, or is it alienating significant linguistic and cultural segments of the nation? And if Afrikaans is on the chopping block today, which language could be next?

The silence from the SABC is speaking volumes, and communities are demanding answers. In a country still healing from its past, does cutting Afrikaans content promote inclusivity, or deepen division? With the broadcaster tight-lipped and public outrage growing, the real question remains: Who decides what languages are worth hearing—and why?

The Mail & Guardian has rightly brought attention to the alarming decision by the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) to enforce compulsory gender modules, a move that threatens to erode the moral fabric of society. While the university seeks to align with progressive global ideologies, such as those promoted in the US, this shift risks disregarding traditional values and the integrity of gender as a biological reality.

The Faculty of Humanities’ decision to make these modules mandatory introduces a dangerous trend—forcing students to embrace a fragmented view of gender. The module pushes Critical Social Justice & Citizenship ideologies that contradict long-standing moral values, making it clear that gender and sex should be viewed as inseparable, rooted in biological facts. Introducing such a controversial policy risks imposing a delusional ideology that fails to acknowledge the natural and binary nature of human existence.

Critics, including those quoted in the Mail & Guardian, question whether the university should take this authoritarian approach to enforce an ideological stance on young minds. Students are being denied the freedom to hold their beliefs, especially when these new theories contradict centuries of established understanding of gender and sex. Such a policy threatens to weaken the moral foundation of future generations, paving the way for a society where facts are altered to fit political agendas.

By imposing these compulsory modules, UKZN disregards not only academic freedom but also the core values that have long guided society. South Africa, already seeing the damaging spread of these ideas, must be cautious in adopting such policies, which ultimately push a misguided narrative onto impressionable minds. It’s crucial to uphold the recognition of two genders—biologically rooted—and resist these delusional attempts to redefine fundamental truths.

As South African learners return to school, Menlyn Park Shopping Centre has launched a thoughtful initiative, “Beat the Wrap Race,” offering free schoolbook wrapping services to help ease the back-to-school burden for families. With the aim to foster community spirit, this project provides a practical solution for busy parents while supporting local children’s homes.

Tshwane, 20 January 2025: The back-to-school season can be overwhelming for many families in Tshwane, especially when it comes to the tedious task of wrapping schoolbooks. To alleviate this challenge, Menlyn Park Shopping Centre has launched the “Beat the Wrap Race” initiative, offering free book wrapping services for local learners.

Located at two convenient stations within the shopping centre — near Starbucks and Timberland, and by the Toys R Us entrance — the service allows shoppers to drop off exercise books, textbooks, or other schoolbooks to be expertly wrapped by a trained team. This initiative, which runs during regular trading hours, promises a swift and neat wrapping process, giving parents and learners peace of mind.

According to Nisha Kemraj, Centre Manager at Menlyn Park, “Wrapping schoolbooks is a time-consuming and expensive task for many families, and we wanted to make the process more enjoyable. This initiative not only offers a practical solution but also creates a sense of community while supporting a great cause.”

Shoppers have a variety of vibrant paper options and cheerful stickers to choose from, and the service is designed to make the wrapping experience more fun and engaging. While waiting for their books to be wrapped, visitors can explore Menlyn Park’s vast array of over 400 retail stores, enjoy a meal, or take a break in the centre’s leisure areas.

To add to the spirit of giving back, the initiative encourages shoppers to make small donations to support two local charities: Louis Botha and Jakaranda Children’s Homes. While the book-wrapping service is entirely free, any contributions will benefit these organizations, helping improve the lives of local children in need.

“At Menlyn Park, we’re not just about shopping – we’re about fostering connections and giving back to the community. The donations collected will help support two important local organisations that do incredible work for children,” says Kemraj.

Menlyn Park’s “Beat the Wrap Race” initiative is more than just a practical solution to a common back-to-school problem. It fosters a sense of community while supporting local children’s homes. Families are encouraged to visit the shopping centre, wrap their schoolbooks, and make a small contribution to a worthy cause.

The Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill has ignited nationwide outrage, sparking heated debates about its impact on South African schools and society. At the heart of the controversy is the clause that permits undocumented foreign learners to enrol in schools without identification—a move that many argue prioritizes non-citizens over struggling South African families. With schools overwhelmed and reports of corruption surfacing, the BELA Bill is under fierce scrutiny.

South Africa’s public education system, already buckling under the weight of overcrowding and limited resources, faces a new challenge: the influx of undocumented foreign learners. Recent amendments under the BELA Bill allow these learners to bypass the requirement for identification, granting them access to schools. While this policy is framed as a humanitarian measure, its consequences have sparked outrage among citizens.

One of the most contentious issues is the alleged bribery scandal tied to school admissions. Reports suggest that undocumented foreigners are paying R500 in bribes to secure their children’s placement in schools. Meanwhile, South African parents—who are exempt from enrollment fees—are left grappling with limited access as spaces fill up. This disparity has fueled accusations of corruption and favouritism, further undermining public trust in the education system.

The situation becomes even more dire when one considers the broader implications. Under current regulations, undocumented foreigners cannot be deported if their children are enrolled in school. Critics argue this policy not only incentivizes illegal immigration but also creates an uneven playing field for South African citizens.

Public Outcry:

Social media platforms, particularly X.com, are ablaze with criticism of the BELA Bill. Comments range from frustration over overcrowded schools to concerns about national security and sovereignty. One user lamented, “This decision to allow children of undocumented foreigners into SA schools without ID is a slap in the face for SA parents struggling to get their kids educated. Our schools are already overcrowded and under-resourced!”

Others highlighted the long-term consequences of the policy:

“Our taxes will be used to fund their education. Their parents will continue to steal everything from us—rape, kill, etc. Soon enough, they will rule us. What will it take for us to fight back?”

“SAns have to compete with foreigners backed by billionaire-funded NGOs. Please use cameras this January and record every situation where our children will be left rejected.”

These sentiments underscore a growing divide between citizens and policymakers, with many accusing the government of prioritizing globalist agendas over the well-being of its own population.

International Context:

The implications of the BELA Bill are not unique to South Africa. Around the world, countries have implemented policies that balance foreign labour and domestic employment, often facing similar criticisms for undermining immigration laws, straining resources, and fueling social tensions. Despite some claims that no responsible country would adopt such policies, many nations—including the U.S. and parts of Europe—have enacted similar measures, prompting ongoing debates about their impact on local communities and economies.

The BELA Bill has become a lightning rod for South Africans’ frustrations over illegal immigration, corruption, and resource allocation. As the 2029 elections loom, this issue is likely to remain a focal point of public discourse. Citizens are calling for urgent reform, demanding that the government prioritize South African families and restore fairness to the education system.
